* Doug Graney, political science and philosophy teacher at Herndon High, received the Horace Mann Award for Teaching Excellence from the National Education Association. Graney won the award for being named one of the top five educators in the United States, and was a finalist for the NEA Member Benefits Award for Teaching Excellence. Graney also received $10,000 from the Horace Mann Companies for being named as a finalist.

* Kate Montgomery (left in photo) and Kelly Lusk (right in photo), ESOL teachers at Fairfax, presented "Teacher Collaboration for Common Assessment," at the 2008 Virginia ESL Supervisor's Association (VESA) conference, on February 9 in Richmond.

* Frank Franz, social studies teacher at Madison, presented “Running Against the Odds” at the American Political Science Association Teaching and Learning Conference in San Jose, California, on February 23. "Running Against the Odds" is a problem-based learning exercise in which AP U.S. Government students assumed the role of political campaign staff for a House of Representatives incumbent running for re-election. Students were required to conduct research, produce political ads, and devise an overall campaign strategy.

* Frank Jenkins (middle), principal, Dean Cicciarelli (right), assistant principal, and Lenore Waggoner, (left) instructional coach, at Herndon Middle presented "Effective Reading Strategies for Diverse Student Populations" at the annual conference of the Virginia Association for Curriculum and Development in Williamsburg on November 30.
