Accelerated Certification Cohort Applications Due March 17, Information Meeting Set for March 10

LEAD Fairfax will sponsor an accelerated certification program for prospective administrators. The one-year program will heavily emphasize experiential learning, developing strategies for leading people and leading learning, and includ a core curriculum focusing on administration. 

To apply, an applicant must be currently employed with Fairfax County Public Schools, and have a minimum of five years' teaching experience, with a minimum of three years of teaching in FCPS.

An interested applicant should submit a resumé with a cover letter indicating his or her interest to Andrew Cole, director of the Office of Leadership Development, Dunn Loring Center, no later than close of business on March 17. All applicants must hold a master's degree in an educational field, but without an administrative endorsement. Information sessions will be offered at the Pathways to Leadership Conference on March 10 at 4 p.m. at Falls Church High School. Interested individuals cannot be currently enrolled in an administrative certification program

K-12 Administrative Internship Applications Due March 17, Information Meeting to Be Held March 10

As part of the LEAD Fairfax initiative for aspiring administrators, administrative internships will be available for the 2009-10 school year. Interns will participate in standards-based leadership training, experiential learning, and professional development. Internships are for one year. 

To qualify, an applicant must currently be employed with Fairfax County Public Schools and have a minimum of five years' teaching experience, with a minimum of three years of teaching experience in FCPS. Applicants must be within 12 credit hours of completing an endorsement in educational administration or must have already completed that endorsement. 

An interested applicant should submit a resumé with a cover letter indicating his or her interest, a copy of his or her endorsement certificate if applicable, and level preference (elementary and/or secondary) to Debra Reeder, director of Employment Services, Department of Human Resources, Gatehouse Administration Center I, no later than close of business on March 17.

Information sessions will be offered at the Pathways to Leadership Conference on March 10. The conference will be held at Falls Church High School beginning at 4 p.m.

Advanced Academic and Resource Teacher Recruitment and Information Meeting to Be Held March 25

Are you interested in learning more about becoming an elementary or middle school advanced academic Level IV teacher (formerly Gifted and Talented) or resource teacher? The Advanced Academic Programs Office is hosting an information meeting on Wednesday, March 25, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., in the Lacey Center multi-purpose room, 3705 Crest Drive, Annandale.

All interested teachers are invited to learn about the roles, responsibilities, and application process to become a K-6 school-based advanced academic resource teacher or a 3-6 level IV teacher. No registration is necessary.

Recently Updated School Board Directives Posted Online

Recent changes and additions to directives that have been made effective within the last 45 days can be found at http://commweb.fcps.edu/schoolboardapps/recentchanges.cfm. Any citizen who requests a hard copy of a directive has a right to receive it and should be provided the most current version printed from the web page. The School Board office, at Gatehouse Administration Center I, maintains the historical records of all directives. 

Note: The School Board office has reassigned the General Support 7000 series to the Department of Communications and Community Outreach per the current version of Regulation 1104, Format for Directives. The Facilities and Transportation Services 7000 series directives have been assigned new numbers in the Facilities (8000 series) and the Financial Services 7000 series directives have been assigned new numbers in the Finance (5000) series. The directives numerical listing will display both the old (listed on left) and new (in parenthesis) number until the affected directive is revised or reissued.

Volunteer VGLA Scorers Wanted, Applications Due March 9

Elementary and middle school educators with content expertise and experience collecting Virginia Grade Level Alternative (VGLA) evidence are encouraged to apply to be volunteer 2009 VGLA scorers. Information on available VGLA scoring opportunities is now available at http://fcpsnet.fcps.edu/is/VGLAscoring/.  

Mathematics is a critical-need area for scoring. Those with experience teaching mathematics content in grades 3-8 are urged to apply to score mathematics binders. Substitutes will be provided to allow selected individuals to attend a half-day training in April and two full days of scoring in May. Exact dates and times for training and scoring depend on the grade level and subject area selected and will be published as part of the application process. Selection will be based on experience with grade-level content and/or collaboration in collection of VGLA evidence.

Take advantage of this opportunity to use your content expertise and support the VGLA process in FCPS. Applications are due by March 9.

Reading Recovery Training Offered for Fall 2009, Information Meetings Scheduled for March 9

Reading Recovery is a short-term, early intervention of one-on-one tutoring for low-achieving first grade students. Training is available for teachers with successful literacy experience at the primary level who can devote two and one-half hours each day to individual instruction. Recommendation by the principal is required. Priority will be given to Title I schools. Applications may be obtained by calling 703-846-8635. Applications must be submitted by April 17.

Interested applicants and/or administrators may want to attend a Reading Recovery Awareness session on March 9 from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Lacey Instructional Center.

School-Based Representatives Needed for Office Personnel Advisory Council, Deadline for Nominations Is March 13

An election will be held in April for school-based office personnel to join the Office Personnel Advisory Council (OPAC). Five representatives will be elected from each of the eight clusters for two-year terms from July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2011. (It is preferred to have at least one representative from each school level: elementary, middle, and high school). 

A school-based office employee (clerical, office assistant, administrative assistant, finance technician, SASI, SIA) can nominate him- or herself or another school-based office employee who accepts the nomination. OPAC meets September through May on the third Thursday of each month from 8 a.m. until approximately 10 a.m. at Gatehouse Administration Center I.

March 13 Is Deadline for Nancy F. Sprague First-Year Administrator Award and Outstanding First-Year Teacher Award

Nominations are now open for the Nancy F. Sprague First-Year Administrator Award and the 2009 FCPS Outstanding First-Year Teacher Award.

The Outstanding First-Year Teacher Award recognizes outstanding performance during the first year of teaching. Principals may nominate teachers who have begun their teaching careers on or after January 1, 2008. The Nancy F. Sprague First-Year Administrator Award recognizes exemplary performance during the first year of principalship. Any FCPS employee or community member may nominate a first-year principal for this award; for more information go to http://www.fcps.edu/DHR/employees/awards/fypoy.htm. The deadline for both awards is March 13.
