Capital One Named FCPS’ Partner Of The Year
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) has named Capital One, a partner in education with Pine Spring Elementary School, as its 2003-04 Partner of the Year. Capital One was honored at the 17th Annual FCPS Business-School Partnership Reception and Awards ceremony held May 20. The yearly event recognizes the nearly 250 area businesses that support FCPS students through partnerships with the schools.
Capital One won the award for its support of Pine Spring Elementary, including an extensive mentoring and tutoring program that features nearly 90 Capital One associates providing support to students in reading, writing, or math. Capitol One sponsors a yearly back-to-school drive to provide school supplies and backpacks to students and donates tickets to performances. Employees support literacy night, family math and science night, Read Across America, and the school’s annual field day, and donate books to Pine Spring students. In turn, the school’s chorus, band, and orchestra perform at the Capital One corporate office in December.
Also at the awards ceremony, representatives of Navy Federal Credit Union presented a new partnership award for principal leadership to Bruce Oliver, who will soon retire as principal of Thoreau Middle School. The award, which recognizes the coordination and leadership of school principals in a business partnership, will be known as the Bruce Oliver Principal Leadership Award. Thoreau and Navy Federal have been partners for 15 years.
The FCPS Department of Educational Accountability was honored as the FCPS office or department that goes beyond the call of duty to establish a partnership or mentoring program for its program with Woodburn Elementary School.

The winners were BRTRC and Westlawn Elementary School; Inova Hospitals, Johnson Controls, Inc., and Northern Virginia Community College’s Medical Education Center and Glasgow Middle School; and Lockheed Martin Management and Data Systems and Lee High School.
The E3 Award recognizes an effective, energizing, and exciting partnership, and was presented to CMS (CACI), nominated by Madison High School.
