Frequently Asked Questions

Who should enroll in the Academy?
Students who enroll in Academy classes typically fall into two categories:  those who seek to enhance the attractiveness of their college applications by completing in-depth courses with high content levels of practical applications, and those who seek industry-sought certification in modern technologies.

How many credits are Academy courses worth, and how often do they meet?
Most Academy courses meet every day for a full block period.  These courses provide two credits toward a Virginia High School Diploma.  Some specialty courses meet every other day for a full block period.  These courses provide one credit toward a Virginia High School diploma.

Is it true that some Academy classes provide more than two credits?
It is possible to receive 3 or 4 credits for each Academy class by signing up for a Co-op program.  Co-op students work at businesses outside of school and gain experience in their academic area. Students may gain 3 credits when they work 270 hours or they may gain 4 credits by working 540 hours throughout the school year.

How do I get to and from Academy classes?
Academy bus transportation from school to school is provided for free by the Fairfax County Public Schools bus system.  Bus shuttles run back and forth from base schools to the Academy for each instructional block each day.

May I drive to and from my Academy class?
If students prefer, they may drive to the Academy instead of taking the bus.  Students often carpool in order to reduce the frequency that any individual student needs to drive.  Drivers must purchase an Academy parking sticker.

Is bus transportation an additional cost?
No, it does not cost money to ride. Bus transportation is provided by the FCPS System. Bus shuttles run back and forth from base schools to the Academy for each block.

If I take a class at the Marshall Academy, will I be late for classes at my base school?
No, the Academy schedule allows for transportation time to and from base schools to ensure that students will arrive in time for their next class.

What should I do if I am sick or if I miss my Academy Class?
Marshall Academy requires that the parent of the child call the Academy or email the Academy attendance office. Marshall Academy Office- (703) 714-5582 Attendance- MarshallAcademy.Attendance@fcps.edu

What happens if my school has a 2-hour delay or school closing? Do I still report to my Academy class?
If Fairfax County Public Schools are closed, you do NOT report to the Marshall Academy. If FCPS has a 2 hours delay, both first and second block Academy classes are canceled and 3rd block classes run on schedule. If FCPS has an early closing, first and second blocks run on time, however, third block will be canceled. Non-Marshall students should report to their base school's guidance office. **This applies to NON-Marshall students.

What happens when my base school has a revised schedule due to pep-rallies, testing, and/or delays such as parent-teacher conferences?
Students are excused from Academy classes when their base school has an altered schedule. However, bus shuttles from base schools to the Academy will continue to run on the same schedule.

How do I go about enrolling in an Academy class?
Applications to the Academy are available in your base school's guidance office.
