Chinese
1:
Students develop the necessary skills for functional oral
and written communication by using the language in meaningful
contexts. They will examine the historical background, educational
system, arts and customs of Chinese culture as well as the
influence of Chinese culture in the United States.
Chinese
2:
Prerequisites:
Level 1 or equivalency test. Students continue to develop
proficiency in all four language skills; listening, speaking,
reading, and writing with emphasis on the ability to communicate
orally. They have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters
to interpret the content of simple readings. The study of
Chinese history and culture is integrated into the language
development process.
Accelerated
Chinese 1&2:
In
this accelerated program, students develop and increase proficiency
in the necessary skills for functional oral and written communication
by using the language in meaningful contexts. Cultural topics
such as art, politics and literature will also be studied
and students will have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters
for simple readings as they progress from Level I to Level
II. |
Chinese
3:
Prerequisites:
Level 2 or equivalency test. Students continue to develop
proficiency in all four language skills: listening, speaking,
reading, and writing with emphasis on understanding and responding
to statement and conversations conducted in Chinese. They
have sufficient knowledge of Chinese characters to interpret
the content of assigned readings dealing with abstract concepts.
Cultural topics include Chinese art, music, and literature
and its influence on American culture.
Chinese
4/IB:
Prerequisites:
Level 3 or equivalency test. Students continue to develop
language proficiency in all four skills: listening, speaking,
reading, and writing with emphasis on functional communication.
They are able to interpret text and write in Chinese on a
wide variety of topics. Cultural topics include Chinese political
and social systems.
AP
Chinese:
Prerequisites:
Level 4 or equivalency. The purpose of this course is to prepare
students to take the Advanced Placement Language examination
given each spring, for which placement and/or credit may be
awarded at the college level if a qualifying score is obtained.
Students study the use of language for active communication.
Specifically, they understand the spoken target language in
both formal and conversational situations. They express ideas
accurately and resourcefully, both orally and in writing,
with reasonable fluency, and they develop a vocabulary sufficiently
ample for reading newspaper and magazine articles, contemporary
literature, and other non-technical writings. They receive
extensive training in the organization and writing of compositions,
review syntax, and study selected works by contemporary authors.
Materials will include recordings, films, newspapers, and
magazines. All students are required to take the Advanced
Placement Chinese Language exam. |
