| Thank you for
considering providing one or more of our qualified 11th or
12th grade Marshall Academy students with a meaningful internship
experience. We appreciate the opportunity to work together
and believe this situation to be a winning one for all participants.
The Marshall Academy gains a valued educational partner who
assists in the learning process and makes a difference in
the life of a student. The intern acquires a further advanced
education and skills that are fully developed in the workplace.
Your company gains an intern with advanced entry-level skills
who can easily adhere to company procedures and philosophy.
If you already know you want to post an internship
opportunity for our students, click here for the Internship
Opportunity Form (pdf format) and fax them to Stephanie
Thompson at 703-714-5681. Complete this form with all pertinent
information about your position that will be posted on our
Academy Web Site for students to review. Each posted Internship
position will be identified only by a Position Code for only
qualified Marshall Academy students to use to seek more specific
information on the company. |
·
I have a job opportunity and would like to advertise it to
your students. How do I do this? Complete
the Internship Opportunity Form with all the pertinent information
concerning your position. Your position will be posted on
the Marshall Academy website under Internships & Job Listings
for all students to review. Each position will be posted by
a Position Code to keep your company anonymous to any non-qualified
candidate outside the Academy seeking employment.
· Who will be the contact person for filling
and monitoring this position from Marshall Academy? Tammy
Wiles, Career Experience Specialist, will be the contact person
at the Academy to post and find qualified students to assist
you in filling your position. She will also be available to
assist you with any questions or concerns you may have while
the student is working with you. Her contact information is
- by e-mail: Tammy.Wiles@fcps.edu
or by phone at (703) 714-5594.
· How does the selection process work in
filling these positions? Once a position is
posted, qualified students submit their resumes to Tammy Wiles,
Career Experience Specialist. Resumes from all interested
students are sent to the employer so they can review the materials
and make their decision on which candidates they would like
to interview. Some employers choose to contact the student
candidates themselves to set-up interviews, however, there
are other employers who prefer that a list of chosen candidates
be given back to the Career Experience Specialist to coordinate
interview times with the students. After students have been
interviewed and selections have been made, the employer may
contact the student directly to inform them that they have
been selected or not. This contact from the employer is so
beneficial even if they didn't receive the position as the
job search process is such a great learning experience for
the students that it provides a good opportunity to receive
constructive feedback directly from the employer that will
assist them in the future.
· How long (duration and hours) can a student
work in the position I need assistance? In
compliance with Virginia Child
Labor Laws , we ask that our student interns work no more
than 20 hours per week while they are in school. However,
the daily internship work hours may vary depending on the
student's schedule and academic demands, in addition to the
needs of the internship sponsor. Most students are finished
with their classes by 2:10pm each weekday. Internship experiences
can begin as early as November of the academic year and conclude
as late as May in order for our students to complete their
academic responsibilities. Internships can be both long-term
(lasting the entire academic year work period) and short-term
(lasting as little as a few weeks).
· Is there any other paperwork that needs to be
completed during the internship period? Each
student will receive a work evaluation from the employer during
each academic quarter they work. This evaluation is conducted
between the employer and student worker using the Internship
Performance Evaluation form provided by Marshall Academy.
Once the evaluation is completed the employer can mail, fax
(703-714-5681) or e-mail Tammy.Wiles@fcps.edu
the form to the Academy in order for the student to receive
credit for his/her experience. The evaluation time is a great
opportunity for dialog concerning the students work performance.
Internships are a great learning experience for the student
and we strive to provide these learning opportunities wherever
possible.
· Can a student be employed
during the summer months? Yes, we have many
students who work with companies over the summer and many
who return to the company to work during their breaks from
college or even work part-time if they are attending colleges
in the area. We also have students who are with us for two
years and continue to work with the company throughout their
time at Marshall Academy.
· Are all internships
paid positions? 99% of our past internships
have been paid positions, however, the issue of pay is determined
totally by the employer and student. The Career Experience
Specialist can provide suggestions of salary ranges.
