The literary arts magazine invites you to the unveiling of this year's publication this Thursday in Ms. Chapmans room, 161, during SAP. Contest winners of this years theme "denouement" will be announced and light refreshments will be served. Those attending will also receive a magazine, so dont miss it!


ATTENTION SENIORS !  You're invited to participate in a Baccalaureate Service being held in your honor on Thursday, June 14, 2012 at 6 PM at Vienna Presbyterian Church (124 Park St., NE).  All family and friends are welcome.  Seniors should arrive dressed in gowns (no cap) by 5:30 PM. Don’t miss out on this evening of celebration and inspiration.  A reception in your honor will follow in the Great Hall. 



Madison's band's wind symphony will perform at the Sudler Flag concert on Tuesday 5/22 at 7:30pm in the auditorium. It is in celebration of Madison's receiving the Sudler Flag of Honor, which is a highly prestigious international award recognizing high school concert bands of outstanding musical excellence over a period of years. Way to go Madison Band!

The Madison Symphonic Band and Jazz Band will be presenting their final year-end Spring Concert the next day, Wednesday 5/23 at 7:30pm in the auditorium. Don't miss these opportunities to see why your Madison band is so highly honored!


Girls currently in grades 8-11are invited to try out for the Madison Dance Team. Tryouts will be held in the Main Gym on Thursday and Friday from 3 to 5pm and Saturday from 9 to 11am--with the formal audition at noon.


The prom will be held on Saturday, June 2nd from 9pm until midnight at the Sheraton of Reston, 11810 Sunrise Valley Drive, Reston, VA 20191.

Tickets will be sold during all lunches from May 21st until June 1st. They are $55 and you can only buy tickets at lunch, not at the hotel.

This year's theme is "An Evening in Paris."


The last late bus of the year will run on Wednesday, June 6 at 4:30pm. No more late buses after that.



Seniors interested in auditioning to perform an originally composed graduation song should sign up in the choral room or outside of room 246.  Auditions will be held after school on Tuesday, May 22 in the choral room. 


Seniors interested in speaking at graduation should pick up information in the Career Center.



Madison Advanced Drama Class presents:

The Boys Next Door on Friday and Saturday (5/25 & 26) at 7:30pm

Tickets are $5 at the door. Come out and support the Mad Drama's high-level students.

Senior Kid Pix are now being collected in the Front Office.  Please leave a copy of your baby photo (no older than 2-1/2 years old) for display at the All Night Grad Party.  (Note:  Photos will not be returned, so be sure to make a copy if it is that one of a kind memory).  See if you can provide that perfect photo that even your classmates cannot guess who it is - or- better yet, be the cutest baby!

If so, nominate that person as “Employee of the Month.”

This is a new initiative to recognize adults in our building who go above and beyond the call of duty in touching the lives of students in ways large and small.

Any employee at Madison High School is eligible to receive this recognition. Forms are available in the Main Office.


NEW LIBRARY LUNCH POLICY
Starting on Tuesday, April 10th, students who want to come to the library during their lunch period will need to present a pass. You can get a yellow library lunch pass from any teacher, or from the library staff. Students are asked to keep their pass with them while they quietly read, study or work on a computer in the library during their lunch.



The Hawk Talk is looking for staff artists for next year! If you are artistic and interested, please see Mrs. Gartlan in room 167 for an application.


The Fairfax County Democrats are looking for summer interns to work alongside staff and leadership members, distribute information, register voters, assist with volunteer recruitment--to name just a few things you would be involved with.  For details, stop by the career center or look in the document library of Family Connection in the jobs folder.

Upcoming Deadlines and Reminders

All National Technical Honor Society service hours must be turned in by this Friday (5/18); seniors must provide $12 for graduation chords in addition to their hours.


Seniors interested in auditioning to perform an originally composed graduation song should sign up in the choral room or outside of room 246.  Auditions will be held after school on Tuesday, May 22 in the choral room.

May 7th-11th is Teacher Appreciation Week. Thank your teachers by ordering them a cupcake through the literary arts magazine! Cupcakes are $1, or $2 for a speciality one, and order forms are available in room 161 or in the pockets on the posters in the hallways. Order forms are due to Ms. Chapman's room, 161, by Friday, May 4th!


Any senior who did not purchase a senior class picture, but is interested in having one should bring $15 in cash to Mrs. Branson’s room, 164. There are just a few copies left; they will be sold on a first come, first served basis.


Shepherd's Center of Oakton-Vienna is looking for student volunteers to help with the annual social justice yard sale at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Fairfax.  Volunteers are needed to sort donations May 2-4 and help with the yard sale Saturday, May 5.  An informational flyer is available in the Career Center.

Are you interested in graphic design? There are openings on the yearbook staff for all levels of graphic design students. Whether you are just beginning your interest in graphic design, or you have some prior knowledge, there may be a place for you on the yearbook staff. You have to be enrolled in the yearbook class to be on the staff. Please stop by room 164 to talk with Mrs. Branson about joining the yearbook staff. Being a member of the yearbook staff is a great opportunity to build your resume for your college applications.


If you are a graduating senior and have not purchased a copy of this year’s yearbook, you only have 10 days left to do so. The yearbook contains the senior panoramic, senior superlatives, all senior portraits, senior baby ads and focuses on all of the contributions seniors have made to Madison this year. There are only a few left available to purchase. To make sure that you reserve a copy of your senior yearbook, be sure toThe yearbook staff has really chronicled how the class of one-two has shown their red and want to make sure you have a memory book of your senior year.

If you interested in running for a position in the Student Government Association as a Class Officer or SAC representative,  packets for declaring candidacy are now available from Mrs. Barton in Room 246. Completed candidate packets are due April 17.  Voting will take place on April 25 & 26.


There are openings on next year’s yearbook staff for photographers. If you enjoy taking pictures as a hobby or are considering a career as a photographer, working on the yearbook staff will teach you the latest photography and Photoshop trends as well as give you access to professional photographic equipment. Colleges look for applicants with journalism experience and working on the yearbook staff can help give you the edge you need to get into a competitive college. Stop by room 164 to chat with Mrs. Branson for more details.

Back by popular demand, the James Madison Athletic Booster Club will be selling Madison apparel on Thursday mornings from 6:50am – 7:20am in front of the large gym.  Teachers and students…come see the new merchandise and do your holiday shopping early while there is plenty of inventory!  Remember to bring your money Thursday morning for merchandise sales!


For all those interested in psychology, whether you've taken a class or you're curious, join MAD Psych Club! Meetings are every Monday in Mr. Douds's room, room 118 starting at 2:15.


If you purchased an Athletic Pass for this school year and received a red temporary pass, please come to the activities office to exchange it for a permanent picture ID Athletic Pass.  The temporary passes will not be accepted after the fall season has ended.  If you have not purchased one and would like to do so, it is not too late.  Come to activities and pick up a form. If you already received a picture ID with last year’s picture on it and would like to exchange it for this year’s picture, bring it by the activities office.


Support the Crew team at FOSTERS GRILLon the first Monday of every month!

If you visit Foster's Grill at any time on the first Monday of the month and mention you are supporting Madison Crew, they will donate ten percent of your bill to MAD Crew.  Please see this flyer, which you should feel free to distribute to friends and families.


The Thespian Honor Society meets on the first Thursday of every month at 2:30pm in the auditorium.


Buy Dominoes Pizza in support of the PTSA "Dough Raising" Night on the second Tuesday of every month of this school year. 20% of sales go back to JMHS! Please see the flyer for details and proof of purchase form--which is required for Madison to get credit.


Juniors and Seniors: be sure to check out the college visit list in Family Connection. Sign up in Family Connection and print out the confirmation page to use as your pass to request teacher signature. Check in the Career Center for more details.

Ongoing Reminders

 

The late bus will run every Wednesday (starting on Sept. 21, 2011) at 4:30pm.


Come join The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, FCA, every Friday during SAP in Room 6-B, Mr. Raenzahn’s room, for some snacks and fellowship!


Students are reminded that no games, or other programs, may be stored in any JMHS network folder (ie: Student folders, teacher2student drive, etc.). When games, or other programs are found, the student’s school computer account is disabled immediately pending administrative action. If your account shows as disabled, please see Mr. Smith in Room 210.

 

Also, remember that if you are logging onto a school computer and you mistype your password three times in a row, your account will automatically be locked. If you get your password wrong the first time, check the CAPS LOCK button and make sure you get your password right the second time!
