General
Assembly
The
Virginia General Assembly dates from the establishment
of the House of Burgesses at Jamestown in 1619. It is heralded
by Virginians as the "oldest continuous law-making body
in the New World." The
General Assembly's chief responsibilities are to represent
citizens in the formulation of public policy, enact
laws of the Commonwealth, approve the budget, levy
taxes, elect judges and confirm appointments by the
Governor. Seventeen
delegates (out of a total of 100) and nine senators
(out of a total of 40) represent Fairfax County either
in whole or in part.
The reports in the categories below describe legislative action from the 2009 General Assembly Session, which adjourned
February 28, 2009.
Bills are reported as passed or failed within ten subject categories, and are hot-linked to the Division of Legislative Services’ web pages for text, summary, fiscal impact statements, and bill status. If a bill of interest is not found in one category, please check another as legislation may fit under multiple labels.
To avoid misunderstanding, please note whether a bill is listed as passed or failed.
Provisions of passed legislation will be effective July 1, 2009, unless otherwise noted in the legislation itself.
