Kilmer Center is a Fairfax County Public School for students, ages 5-22, with intellectual disabilities (severe), autism, and intellectual disabilities.
Curriculum areas include: Personal Management, Recreation and Leisure, School and Community, Vocational, Motor Skills, Functional Academics, Communication, and Social Competence. Students participate in activities in the school setting and in the community, with ample opportunities to demonstrate the abilities they have developed in a variety of environments with both the disabled and non-disabled.
Using a transdisciplinary model that seeks input from all disciplines
working with a student (school staff, physicians, and other outside
resources), services are integrated to create an educational program
that addresses the individual needs of each student. Teachers and specialists
collaborate to develop IEP goals, objectives, behavior strategies,
and to identify the supports necessary to allow students to successfully
transition to less restrictive educational settings.
Students with Intellectual Disabilities participate in a Life Skills Curriculum,
supported by a teacher, public health training assistant, and public
health attendant. Class size can range from 5-8 students. This staffing
provides the direct assistance necessary for students to interact with
their environment.
Students in the Transition Program are supported by a teacher,
public health training assistant and public health attendant. This special
program has a lower student to staff ratio to support students
with autism and intellectual disabilities, who present challenging behaviors.
The curriculum is based upon the cognitive levels of the students and
emphasizes a strong functional academic component in which communication
skills are emphasized.
It is the goal of the staff at the Kilmer Center to prepare students
to move on to programs in a less restrictive educational environment.
