The principal, assistant principal, public health nurse, school psychologist, behavioral resource teachers, vocational coordinator, and school social worker provide an array of services and supports to students and families including the coordination of: child study meetings, individual meetings to discuss school or home issues; parent support groups to discuss common issues and concerns about parenting a child with special needs; referral to appropriate community resources and assistance in completing forms for programs such as Medicaid.
The school coordinates many services to families including: psychiatric consultation and dental services via the Regional Community Support Center, parent support, conferences, Sibling Day, referral to community services, assistance in obtaining appropriate services in the Community, Child Studies, child specific team meetings, physician referral, reevaluation testing, behavioral consultation, transportation to other school placements, and other assistance as requested by families.
The school social worker serves as a liaison between the family, school, and community. The social worker serves as a member of the child study team, the local screening committee, and the child specific team assessing the needs of students and their families, providing advocacy, facilitating communication, developing intervention plans, and referring and assisting families to obtain needed services. She responds to and intervenes in crisis situations to ensure the safety and welfare of students and their families. She keeps track of students' progress via classroom observations, home visits, and teacher consultation. The social worker assesses students and families' needs via sociocultural assessments and triennial reviews. She offers emotional support and counseling to students and their families. She trains and supervises Kilmer Middle School and Madeira High School students in the Student Assistant Program.
