Lesson 15: Mixed Flocks

Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, White-breasted Nuthatches, and Downy Woodpeckers get together and form mixed species flocks in Winter. Read about each bird and answer the questions below.

Compare what each of these birds eat. Which foods do you think they find in the Winter? Who eats what? Which foods eaten are the same? Which ones aren't? Describe each birds eating behaviors.

Why do you think these birds travel and eat together in the Winter? Why don't they do it in the Summer?
