Closing the Achievement Gap

"'Closing the gap' for students often starts with 'closing the gap' among the staff." The faculty and staff of Island Creek Elementary have made a conscious effort to close the gaps and eliminate differences amongst students. The result was teaching the same programs, using the same vocabulary, exercising best practices, and sharing/analyzing common assessments. The results of this have been studied by Fairfax County Office of Accountability and are available in the website that follows. If you scan the left side of the book, you can scroll down to Island Creek's page. These math numbers are so impressive. The lined graph shows just how much we have been focused on individual students, and differentiating. One of our goals this year is to celebrate our successes and this is a success worthy of celebration!!

Are Your Children Safe on the Internet?

The internet is a wonderful tool for education, information, and entertainment, but are your kids safe when they use it? How closely do you monitor its use? Are you up to speed on concerns such as Personal Safety, Cyber Community Issues (including cyber-bullying), Predator Identification, Cyber Security, and Intellectual Property? FCPS has partnered with an organization called I-Safe to help educators and parents become informed and prepared to help children use the web safely. Please consider creating an I-Safe parent account (FREE) and take the on-line course. Click here to go to I-Safe
