High School Standards of Learning

Training and Remediation

The High School Standards of Learning (SOL) office is primarily responsible for teacher training to support instruction in courses tested by the Standards of Learning Tests. The training encompasses a wide range of topics including teaching strategies, assessment tools, data analysis, pacing and sequencing, as well as topics related specifically to each content area.

SOL Remediation Courses

Developing Literacies
Developing Literacies is a full year, one credit, content area reading elective course designed to provide focused remediation to students entering the ninth grade who have failed one or more SOL test(s) or who have not demonstrated competence in reading instructional materials.

Expanding Literacies
Expanding Literacies is a full year one credit English elective course designed to provide remediation to students who have been identified as at risk of failing the EOC English: Reading/Literature and Research and/or the EOC English: Writing SOL Tests given in eleventh grade. Students can repeat Expanding Literacies and receive a second full year English elective credit.

English 12 with SOL Focus
English 12/SOL Focus provides direct remediation of reading and writing skills and English content necessary to pass
the EOC English: Reading/Literature and Research SOL and/or
the EOC English: Writing SOL Tests in the context of an English 12 course. Students will have the opportunity to retake these SOL tests.
