Description: Students develop the ability to communicate about themselves and their immediate environment using simple sentences containing basic language structures. This communication is evidenced in all four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - with emphasis on the ability to communicate orally and in writing. Students begin to explore and study the POS themes of Personal and Family Life, School Life, Social Life, and Community Life. For middle school students, this credit becomes a part of the high school transcript, is included in the determination of the high school grade point average (GPA), and counts toward fulfilling the world languages requirements of the high school Advanced Studies diploma. It also counts toward the total number of credits required for graduation.

Students gain a deeper understanding of the world around them while studying the POS themes of Rights and Responsibilities, Future Plans and Choices, Teen Culture, Environment, and Humanities.

Description: Students learn to understand and produce the sounds, stress patterns, and intonation of the language. Through basic vocabulary and structure, they learn to initiate and sustain short conversations on familiar topics, read short passages, and write short/paragraphs. They listen to native speakers on tapes, and learn about family structure, school life, holidays, and geography of the country. Students will be assessed frequently on their spontaneous speaking proficiency.

Description: The purpose of this course is to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Language examination given each spring, for which placement and/or credit may be awarded at the college level if a qualifying score is obtained. Students study the use of language for active communication. Specifically, they understand the spoken target language in both formal and conversational situations. They express ideas accurately and resourcefully, both orally and in writing, with reasonable fluency, and they develop a vocabulary sufficiently ample for reading newspaper and magazine articles, contemporary literature, and other nontechnical writings. They receive extensive training in the organization and writing of compositions, review syntax, and study selected works by contemporary authors.
All students are required to take the Advanced Placement Spanish Language exam.

Description: The purpose of this course is to prepare students to take the Advanced Placement examination in Spanish Literature and Composition, for which college credit and/or placement is given if a qualifying score is achieved. Students study composition and literary analysis at a level equivalent to that of a full-year introductory college course. Through in-depth studies of literary works, students sharpen their awareness of language and their understanding of the writer's craft. They establish critical standards for appreciating and evaluating literature. All students are required to take the Advanced Placement Spanish exam.
