High School Mathematics

About High School Mathematics

The intent of the high school mathematics program is to prepare all students to use mathematics and problem-solving skills in further education or on the job. The program focuses on mastering the objectives of the SOL, problem-solving, communicating mathematically, reasoning mathematically, applying mathematics to real-world situations, and using technology.

The FCPS High School Mathematics program includes courses from Algebra through Calculus. Each course is based upon a Program of Studies aligned with the Virginia Standards of Learning and Principles and Standards for School Mathematics from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000. High Schools offer either the College Board Advanced Placement Program or the International Baccalaureate Program in mathematics and computer science.

High Schools may offer:

  • Algebra 1 Part 1
  • Algebra 1
  • Algebra 1 Honors
  • Geometry and Geometry Honors
  • Algebra 2 and Algebra 2 Honors
  • Algebra 2 with Trigonometry (TJHSST and IB schools only)
  • Precalculus with Trigonometry and Precalculus with Trigonometry Honors
  • Discrete Mathematics
  • Probability and Statistics
  • Computer Science

Advanced Placement schools may offer:

  • AP Calculus AB
  • AP Calculus BC
  • AP Statistics
  • AP Computer Science

International Baccalaureate schools may offer:

  • IB Mathematical Studies SL
  • IB Mathematics SL
  • IB Mathematics HL
  • IB Computer Science
