About Adapted Physical Education

Adapted physical education may be required for students with disabilities when their disability significantly impacts their participation in general physical education. Adapted physical education provides developmentally appropriate physical education by adapting or modifying the physical education curriculum to meet the individualized needs of students with disabilities.

In Fairfax County Public Schools, adapted physical education services are offered through a multidisciplinary team approach. In collaboration with teachers and staff members, a variety of strategies and supports are integrated into the physical education setting to ensure safe and successful participation.

A continuum of adapted physical education services provides students the opportunity to receive instruction in the least restrictive environment. Adapted physical education teachers travel among schools to provide support, consultation, and collaboration for students requiring specialized instruction in their physical education classes. School-based adapted physical education teachers provide specialized instruction for students in self-contained adapted physical education classes.
