Fine and Practical Arts Requirement

CTE classes meet the practical arts portion of this requirement.

This requirement is needed for the advanced (24-credit), standard (22-credit), and modified standard (20-credit) diplomas. A student will be awarded a fine/practical arts credit for completion of a minimum of one credit in one of the following:

  • a fine arts course that leads to students aesthetic education (visual arts, theatre arts, music, dance, creative writing, or speech),
  • a career and technical education course
  • a special education career and transition course
  • or a combination of professional technical studies courses that total one credit.

Courses do not have to be in the same program area to meet this requirement. For example, one semester of a business and information technology course and one semester of a family and consumer science course will meet the practical arts requirement.

Courses fulfilling the fine and practical arts requirement may be used to meet the sequential electives requirement.

Sequential Electives

CTE classes taken in a combination of two classes in which the content builds on each other may meet this requirement.

This requirement is needed for the standard (22-credit) and modified standard (20-credit) diplomas. Students may satisfy the sequential elective requirement by passing any two courses in which the content in the second course builds upon the first course or through coursework that is double or triple the required 140-hour instructional time.

Credit awarded through cooperative education may not be used to satisfy the sequential elective requirement. Courses fulfilling the sequential electives requirement may be used to meet the fine and practical arts requirement.

Verified Credits

CTE students have the opportunity to obtain industry certifications and/or licenses related to many CTE courses. Some of these certifications and/or licenses combined with the course work can be used towards student-selected verified credits.
