    WHY CHOOSE THIS PROGRAM?

GLOBAL PLUS is a new language program which blends the strengths and proven benefits of 2 previous well established (FCPS / ACE) language programs–FLEX and GLOBAL.

  1. The goal of the GLOBAL PLUS program is to foster a world language advantage by offering high quality language classes to elementary students, and thereby capture the optimal time in a child’s life to learn a new language.
  2. GLOBAL PLUS students will establish a strong foundation in language learning, that will give them an edge as they enter middle school and beyond.
  3. Teachers will now have access to three different curricula that address the needs of different skill levels: first- time learners to heritage speakers.
  4. In support of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate, the GLOBAL PLUS curriculum delivers a stronger focus on communication. This will provide children with skills to establish meaningful connections as they become GLOBAL citizens of a rapidly changing, increasingly diverse and interconnected world.

Check back in August for details on locations, prices and Early Bird Registration Discounts!

ACE offers two after-school world language programs for elementary age students.

GLOBAL is an after school language program that delivers a more academic approach to language learning. The program aims to provide instruction that supports the concepts taught in the subject areas at the respective grade level. This language program uses curriculum created by the FCPS World Languages office.

FLEX is an after-school world language enrichment program for elementary school children. Through stories, games, activities, and music, children experience a world language and its culture.

Why choose this program?

Reinforce grade level Standards of Learning objectives while teaching a language.

The GLOBAL curriculum is aligned with the Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) curriculum to provide a framework for schools without a language program and added enrichment for schools that offer FLES. Themes incorporate social studies, science, math, and language arts and enhance the FCPS Program of Studies and the Virginia Standards of Learning. Teachers are employed by FCPS and are trained for the GLOBAL program and in Best Practices in Teaching and Learning.

Allows students to develop basic communicative skills in a language.

Students will enjoy language learning using Smartboard technology while reinforcing and enriching content in other disciplines beyond the regular school day hours. GLOBAL teachers complete a training program delivered by the FCPS World Languages office team.

What is the program structure?

Students are grouped in grades 1-3 and grades 4-6 and receive 1 hour per week of language instruction for 20 weeks. The cost is $319. Some schools offer 10 week courses for $169. Local schools will use GLOBAL Reps (volunteers) who will organize the classes at the school level following the guidance of the GLOBAL program specialist (FCPS Adult and Community Education) and the ISD World Languages office. Most children who attend GLOBAL classes are enrolled in the school.

What are the goals of the FLEX program?

  • Capture the optimal time in a child's life for learning another language.
  • Learn basic foreign language vocabulary and phrases.
  • Gain an understanding and knowledge of other cultures and countries.

What is the program structure?

FLEX classes are held before or after school once or twice a week. Each class meets for one hour. Sessions can be 10, 15 or 20 weeks long, depending on the requests of the individual school. Prices can vary from $159 to $225 per session.
FLEX offers classes Arabic, American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, and Spanish. All schools do not offer all languages.

Class levels include kindergarten, grades 1-3, and grades 4-6. There is a maximum of 15 children in a class. FLEX PTA representatives organize the classes at the school level following the guidance of the FLEX specialist and the guidelines of Fairfax County Public Schools, Adult and Community Education.

What are the enrollment procedures for FLEX?

FLEX classes and registrations are organized and handled at individual elementary schools by the FLEX PTA representative. Most children who attend FLEX classes are enrolled in the school. However, FLEX classes are open to children from private schools or home-schooled children, but parents must provide transportation.

FLEX emergency forms are required from all students on the first day of class.

Frequently Asked Questions

When do FLEX classes start and how do I register?

FLEX classes are offered at many participating schools and will start appearing in the early fall and spring. Start dates vary by school.

  • To register your child at the school he/she attends, click here.
  • If you would like to register your child at a school other than his/her base school, please email a request to flexcentralsupport@fcps.edu to check availability. Transportation is not provided.
  • To register a non-FCPS student (if space allows), please call 703-658-1215 for further information.

Can a Kindergartener take a FLEX class?

Yes, FLEX is often appealing to Kindergarten students who are being introduced to a foreign language for the first time, through the use of games, songs and other fun activities. We make every attempt to offer Kindergarten classes if they are requested by the school community. However, we usually do not mix Kindergarten students with other grades as this can sometimes be detrimental and disruptive to the class.

FLEX is not offered at my school; how do I bring FLEX classes to my child’s school?

Please contact your school Principal and/or PTA to indicate your interest in FLEX. We will be more than happy to send them information on how to set up the program or meet with them in person.
