About

Fairfax County Public Schools, in cooperation with the College Board, is pleased to offer the Advanced Placement Summer Institute (APSI) as part of an on-going effort to assist schools in meeting the diverse needs of Advanced Placement (AP) students.  Institute consultants are experienced AP teachers and readers who have demonstrated their ability to prepare teachers to effectively teach AP classes.

The AP Institute offers teachers the information, tools, and strategies they need to build successful Advanced Placement programs in their schools.  Participants will focus on curriculum challenges, share and discuss teaching strategies, and review the contributions of research to content, instruction, and labs. A certificate awarding recertification points will be issued to all participants following successful completion of the course.  The tuition for non-Fairfax County teachers is $700 (includes College Board workshop handbooks, supplementary materials, and meals each day).

Registration/Cost ($700)

REGISTRATION OPENS ON FEBRUARY 8, 2016.  FCPS provides course fees for in-county teachers.  The fee for non-FCPS teachers is $700.

Course Documentation

FCPS teachers who complete an AP Summer Institute course will receive 30 professional development points. Non-FCPS teachers will receive a certificate of completion.

 

Substitutions/Refunds

  • Refunds for cancellations:  

    • Please email leburry@fcps.edu to request withdrawal from the AP Summer Institute. (Note: there is a $50 processing fee for refunds.) After June 1, 2016 only substitutions are allowed.
  • Substitutions (changing name of the participating teacher): 

    • Please email leburry@fcps.edu to request a substitution. Include the title of the course, name of the registered teacher and the substituting teacher. Substitutions cannot be made after June 17, 2016
  • Substitutions (changing course): 

    • Please email leburry@fcps.edu to request a course substitution. Include the title of the current course, the name of the requested course. Requests will be honored only if requested course is not full. Course substitutions cannot be made after June 17, 2016.

Workshop Cancellation

FCPS will make every effort to maintain the published schedule of workshops; however, we reserve the right to make any necessary changes and/or cancellations. If a workshop is changed or canceled, all participants will be notified immediately and will be given the opportunity to transfer to an open workshop or receive a full refund.

 

Important Dates/Costs

  • Registration opens February 8th, 2016.   
  • Registration ends and full payment is due by June 1, 2016.
  • Refunds on cancellations will be given through June 1, 2016 (minus a $50 processing fee). 
  • Substitutions will be allowed through June 17, 2016.
  • Cancellations after June 1, 2016 and registered participants who do not attend the institute forfeit the full amount of tuition.

 

College Board Scholarship

If you received a scholarship for tuition, please indicate this on the registration form and email your acceptance letter t leburry@fcps.edu.  Without this documentation, your registration cannot be processed. 

 

Institute Materials

All sessions include instructional materials and manuals prepared by The College Board and the consultants.  Other materials needed for each course are noted in the course descriptions.  Materials provided by consultants will be available digitally. Participants should bring a laptop to access online materials. 

 

Food

A continental breakfast and will be provided each day.  (Vegetarian options will be available.)  A variety of lunch options are located in close proximity to Woodson HS.  Many are within walking distance from the school.
