Teacher of the Year Award

Teacher of the YearThe Teacher of the Year Award is Fairfax County Public School’s top honor in the teaching profession. The winner, finalists, and nominees are all recognized at the annual FCPS Honors awards ceremony.

The winner will also be honored by The Washington Post, receiving the Agnes Meyer Outstanding Teacher Award. They then go on to compete for the Virginia Department of Education State Teacher of the Year Award   

Parents, students, administrators, FCPS staff and teachers, Fairfax County government employees, and Fairfax County citizens are invited and encouraged to nominate a deserving teacher for this prestigious award.

To be eligible for nomination, the teacher must:

  • Have five consecutive years of teaching experience, with the last three years on a full-time teaching contract in FCPS.
  • Plan to continue in an active teaching status next year.
  • Teach a group(s) of students on a regular basis.
  • Be aware of and in agreement with this nomination.

Nominees must be teachers who:

  • Instill in students a desire to learn and achieve.
  • Understand the individual needs of students, encourage their talents, and foster their self-esteem.
  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of subject matter and the ability to share it effectively with students.
  • Foster cooperative relationships with colleagues and the community.
  • Demonstrate outstanding leadership.
