Accommodations

Disability Assistance and Accommodations

The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to help those with disabilities to perform their jobs. As defined by the ADAAA, a person with a serious physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity has a disability. An employee's disability must be verified by the employee's doctor and, in some cases, confirmed by a doctor chosen by the school system.

FCPS complies with the ADAAA and provides reasonable accommodation to those who need it. Any employee who believes that he or she has a disability and needs special assistance to perform his or her job should contact the Office of Equity and Compliance, Department of Human Resources, at 571-423-3050, fax 571-423-3057, or dial 711 for access to Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS). All communications are confidential.

Also, any employee or applicant needing accommodations, such as a sign language interpreter or vision enhancement equipment, should contact the OEC.

Religious Accommodations

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of l964 prohibits employers from discriminating against individuals because of their religion in hiring, firing, and other terms and conditions of employment. Under Title VII, employers must reasonably accommodate employees' sincerely held religious practices unless doing so would impose an undue hardship on the employer. A reasonable religious accommodation is any adjustment to the work environment that will allow the employee to practice their religion. An employer might accommodate an employee's religious beliefs or practices by allowing: flexible scheduling, voluntary substitutions or swaps, job reassignments and lateral transfers, modification of grooming requirements and other workplace practices, policies and/or procedures.

FCPS complies with Title VII and provides reasonable accommodations to those who need it. An employee who needs a religious accommodation should contact the Office of Equity and Compliance, Department of Human Resources, at 571-423-3050, fax 571-423-3057, or dial 711 for access to Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS).

Sign Language Interpreter Requests

Employees needing a sign language interpreter for any Fairfax County Public Schools meeting or event must have their principal or program manager submit a request to the Office of Equity and Compliance (OEC).

Job applicants needing interpreter services should ask the Office of Employment Services to submit a request on their behalf.

The OEC must receive all requests for sign language interpreters at least seven (7) business days prior to the scheduled event. Requests must have the approval of and be submitted by the principal, program manager, or employment services. The OEC will make every effort to provide services, however we cannot guarantee the availability of sign language interpreters on short notice. In addition, there is a minimum 2-hour service charge so we ask that you take this into consideration when scheduling meetings.

Cancellations should be made at least three (3) business days prior to the scheduled event. FCPS is charged the full cost for any confirmed service canceled on shorter notice.

To ensure prompt and accurate processing, requests should be submitted via e-mail using the form on the right side of this page. If you do not have e-mail access, the form can be completed and faxed to OEC at 571-423-3057. If you have any questions, please call 571-423-3050.
