Disability Assistance and Accommodations

The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and requires employers to provide reasonable accommodations to help those with disabilities to perform their jobs. As defined by the ADAAA, a person with a serious physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity has a disability. An employee's disability must be verified by the employee's doctor and, in some cases, confirmed by a doctor chosen by the school system.

FCPS complies with the ADAAA and provides reasonable accommodation to those who need it. Any employee who believes that he or she has a disability and needs special assistance to perform his or her job should contact the Office of Equity and Compliance (OEC), Department of Human Resources, at 571-423-3050, fax 571-423-3057, or dial 711 for access to Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS). All communications are confidential.

Also, any employee or applicant needing accommodations, such as a sign language interpreter or vision enhancement equipment, should contact the OEC.

Religious Accommodations

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of l964 prohibits employers from discriminating against individuals because of their religion in hiring, firing, and other terms and conditions of employment. Under Title VII, employers must reasonably accommodate employees' sincerely held religious practices unless doing so would impose an undue hardship on the employer. A reasonable religious accommodation is any adjustment to the work environment that will allow the employee to practice their religion. An employer might accommodate an employee's religious beliefs or practices by allowing: flexible scheduling, voluntary substitutions or swaps, job reassignments and lateral transfers, modification of grooming requirements and other workplace practices, policies and/or procedures.

FCPS complies with Title VII and provides reasonable accommodations to those who need it. An employee who needs a religious accommodation should contact the Office of Equity and Compliance, Department of Human Resources, at 571-423-3050, fax 571-423-3057, or dial 711 for access to TRS.

Sign Language Interpreter Requests

Use of sign language interpreters is one of many accommodations available for employees who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Other accommodations available include subtitles, captioning, and assistive technology devices such as UbiDuo. Employees are encouraged to contact the Office of Equity and Compliance (OEC) to discuss these options. OEC has an established process for requesting, scheduling, and canceling requests for sign language interpreter services.

Submitting a Request

Job applicants needing sign language interpreter services should ask their Employment Services representative to submit a request form on their behalf.

A request form must be submitted to the OEC at least 7 business days before the scheduled event. We make every effort to provide services, but cannot guarantee a sign language interpreter will be provided, especially if we do not recieve 7-days notice. FCPS is charged for a minimum of two hours. Requests lasting longer than two hours require a second interpreter.

Cancellations must be made 3 business days prior to the scheduled event.

If you have any questions, please call 571-423-3050.
