Adding a Child to Your Family

Congratulations on your new addition!

This guide is intended to help you identify common changes that should be made when you add a child to your family.

You may also wish to review the Pending Maternity/Paternity/Guardianship Leave Checklist that explains when each form or step should be completed.

Adding a child through Birth, Adoption, or Fostering

Benefits

• Add child to medical insurance (within 30 days)
• Review/update your beneficiary designations
• Consider adjusting the amount of life insurance you carry
• Add dependent life insurance (within 30 days)
• Add Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) (within 30 days)
• Increase Health Care Flexible Spending Account (FSA) (within 30 days)
• File your intention to take FMLA leave
• Longer unpaid Leave of Absences are available

Postpartum Recovery Benefits

Postpartum recovery benefits are considered to be a form of medical leave and thus apply only to employees who carry and deliver a baby.
