Substitute Teaching in FCPS

We are currently hiring: Substitute Teachers, Substitute Assistants, Substitute Public Health Attendants (PHA).

Minimum Qualifications

Substitute Teachers: A minimum of 60 hours of college credit.

Substitute Assistants & PHAs:  A high school diploma.

Substitute Pay

Substitute employees are paid biweekly. Rates for individual positions are listed on the Substitute & Homebound Teacher scale on the Salary Scales page.

Three-Step Hiring Process for Substitute Teachers, Assistants, and PHAs

Step 1: Apply Online

Apply online through the FCPS Instructional Talent Gateway. When applying for a substitute position, you must upload the following documents:

  • Resumé
  • Copy of your high school diploma, and official/unofficial college transcripts that show 60 credit hours or more (grade reports or college diplomas are not accepted).
  • Two current-year letters of reference signed and dated within the last 12 months.  One letter must be a professional references letter from your most recent employer someone in a supervisory position. No family members please. Both must include contact information for verification.

Note: If your high school diploma or college transcript was issued outside of the U.S., an evaluation is required. No exceptions will be made. Visit the Virginia Department of Education website for a list of approved agencies for obtaining official U.S. degree-equivalency evaluation of foreign credentials:

Step 2: Teacher and Substitute Teacher Applicants

We receive a large number of resumes, and therefore use the web-based TeacherInsight Interview. A TeacherInsight access code will be sent via e-mail within 2 business days of your submitted application. The interview (which can be accessed 24-7) takes approximately 40 minutes to complete, and must be completed in one continuous session. Each question is timed, so it is important to complete the interview when you will not be interrupted. If you need assistance, call the Help desk at 1-877-425-5872. Step 3: Substitute Orientation

After submitting your résumé and completing the TeacherInsight Interview, please call the Office of Substitute Employment to schedule an appointment for a 4 hour orientation, which includes fingerprinting for a criminal background check.

Bring the following documents with you to orientation (applicants without ALL documents will not be processed):

  • A negative TB test or a chest x-ray dated within the last 12 months and signed by a physician
  • State-issued ID or a driver's license and one of the following:
    • Social Security Card (social security card in your legal name—no exceptions)
    • Birth Certificate
    • Unexpired Passport
