3/9/2011 Update

Grandfathering Related to Southwestern Boundary Study

  • All rising sixth (6th) grade students, with the exception of Clifton ES students, will be grandfathered at their current base school and transportation will be provided. 
  • Students attending Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) centers:  Rising sixth (6th) grade students attending AAP Centers will be grandfathered at their current center if their center assignment has been changed as a part of this boundary study. Example: Rising sixth (6th) grade students from the areas being assigned to White Oaks AAP Center will be grandfathered at Willow Springs AAP Center with transportation.
  • Rising eighth (8th)grade AAP Center students will be grandfathered at their current center and transportation will be provided.  Example:   Rising eighth (8th) grade AAP center students from the areas being assigned to Lake Braddock Middle School center will be grandfathered at Rocky Run Middle School AAP center.

School Board Approved Boundaries

On Thursday, February 24, 2011, the Fairfax County School Board approved the Southwestern Boundary Study. A map of the approved boundaries is available. Click here to view detailed maps of each individual move.

Boundary adjustment will take effect during the 2011-12 school year at the following schools:

Bonnie Brae, Brookfield, Bull Run, Cub Run, Deer Park, Eagle View, Fairview, Fairfax Villa, Greenbriar East, Greenbriar West, London Towne, Oak View, Poplar Tree, Providence, Union Mill, Virginia Run, and Willow Springs Elementary Schools.

Boundary adjustment will take effect during the 2013-14 school year at the following schools:

Centreville, Centre Ridge, Colin Powell, Eagle View, Fairfax Villa, Greenbriar East, and Union Mill Elementary Schools.

In an effort to align Advanced Academic Program (AAP) center assignments with school boundary changes, the following AAP center assignments were also approved:

  • Students from Clifton being assigned to Union Mill will attend the AAP Centers at Willow Springs Elementary and Rocky Run Middle School.
  • Students from Clifton being assigned to Oak View will attend the AAP Centers at Willow Springs Elementary and Lake Braddock Middle School.
  • Students from Clifton being assigned to Fairview will attend the AAP Centers at White Oaks Elementary and Lake Braddock Middle School.
  • Rising 7th grade AAP students from the areas being assigned to Lake Braddock Middle School will attend that school beginning in the 2011-12 school year.
  • Rising 8th grade AAP students from the areas being assigned to Lake Braddock Middle School may finish their middle school experience (8th grade) at the school they currently attend (Rocky Run).
  • Students from Fairview being assigned to Bonnie Brae will continue attending the AAP centers at White Oaks Elementary and Lake Braddock Middle Schools.
  • Students from Eagle View will attend the AAP Center at Willow Springs Elementary School. These students currently attend the AAP Center at Greenbriar West Elementary School. At Middle School level these students will continue attending AAP Center at Rocky Run Middle School.

2/11/2011 Update

In response to many questions related to Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) and the staff recommendation for re-assignment of Clifton Elementary students, the following information is provided for clarification:

  • Clifton students assigned to Fairview would attend the White Oaks Elementary AAP center (or remain at Fairview for Level IV services) and attend the Lake Braddock AAP center for middle school.
  • Clifton students assigned to Oak View would attend the Willow Springs AAP center (or remain at Oak View for Level IV services) and the Lake Braddock AAP center for middle school. Only rising 8th graders would be grandfathered at Rocky Run AAP center. Rising 7th graders should attend Lake Braddock AAP center.
  • Clifton students moving to Union Mill would remain at the Willow Springs Elementary and Rocky Run Middle AAP centers.

School Board Work Session 2/14/2011

The School Board’s work session on the Southwestern Boundary Study is scheduled for February 14, 2011, at Gatehouse Administration Center, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Suite 1600, Falls Church, VA 22042. The following are staff responses to questions asked by the School Board at the January 20, 2011, meeting.

Staff Recommendation

In response to community feedback on options A, B, C and D, staff has developed the final staff recommendation for presentation to the School Board on January 20, 2011. The proposed plan aligns with the School Board’s objectives to maximize efficient use of capital and operating funding, and to achieve 95-105 percent building utilization ranges for all schools in the study and shows the capacity implications for the seven schools in the study that currently do not have full-day kindergarten. Public hearings on the Southwestern Boundary Study are scheduled for February 7 and 8, 2011, at Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA 22042; the School Board’s work session is scheduled on February 14, 2011, at Gatehouse Administration Center, 8115 Gatehouse Road, Suite 1600, Falls Church, VA 22042, with School Board action scheduled on February 24, 2011, at Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA 22042.

Community Feedback on Option D & Additional Comments on Options A, B and C

Community feedback on the Southwestern Boundary Study Option D, as well as additional comments on the preliminary Options A, B and C, are now available for review. Staff will also be reviewing the feedback in the coming weeks and proposing a final staff recommendation to the School Board on January 20, 2011.
