Facilities Planning Advisory Council (FPAC)

Latest News (May 17, 2012)

The Fairfax County School Board is accepting applications for two vacancies on the Facilities Planning Advisory Council (FPAC)—an at-large position and a representative for the Springfield district.

  • To be eligible for the at-large position, you must be a resident of Fairfax County.
  • To be eligible for the Springfield position, you must be a resident of the Springfield Magisterial District

The School Board established FPAC in 2010 to advise the Board and staff in developing comprehensive, long-term plans for Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) facility needs. Applications will be accepted through Friday June 8, 2012.

Among the issues council members will be considering are school program capacity, transportation and operating efficiencies, financing and construction strategies, school renovations and closures, and planning for new buildings and boundaries.

Feedback Sought On FCPS Facilities

Parents are invited to provide input for a long-term strategic plan that will help Fairfax County Public Schools prepare for critical facilities issues facing the school system in the next decade, including increasing enrollment, the availability of space to meet needs, and adequate funding to meet maintenance, renovation, and construction needs. The School-Board appointed Facilities Planning Advisory Council (FPAC) is developing the new strategic plan and encourages parents and all residents to participate in community meetings on:

Tuesday, April 24, 7-9 p.m. - Meeting Presentation
Carson Middle School cafeteria, Herndon
Glasgow Middle School cafeteria, Alexandria

Tuesday, May 22, 7-9 p.m. - Meeting Presentation
Whitman Middle School cafeteria, Alexandria
Robinson Secondary School blue cafeteria, Fairfax

The facilities strategic plan is driven by issues identified in FPAC's careful evaluation of the current conditions and input from residents at a series of listening tours FPAC held in spring and fall 2011: space utilization (enrollment, capacity, and programs), operations and maintenance, capital improvement, community use, and communications.

Topics Under FPAC Consideration

School Board Charge – For the 2011-12 school year, the School Board has charged the FPAC to:  “Develop and update annually a long-term strategic plan for FCPS facility needs for presentation to and approval by the School Board.  The strategic plan should reflect input from all interested stakeholders and constituencies.”

Long-Term Strategic Facilities Plan - The objective of the long-term plan is better and earlier information provided to the entire community about upcoming facilities changes and the drivers and considerations behind them.  The Strategic Facilities Plan will be developed in stages as an incremental and evolutionary process.  The first stage is to develop a strategic framework that can be used to guide decision-making for capital improvements, boundary studies, and program assignment changes. Four community meetings are being held in spring 2012 on the draft plan.  The SFP will be written at the strategic level and should have a useful life of many years.  The initial SFP will be submitted to the School Board in Fall 2012.
