The AHERA act requires Fairfax County Public Schools to:
- Inspect buildings for non-friable and friable asbestos containing materials.
- Formulate management plans.
- Use response actions or abatement or abatement methods.
- Provide awareness training to school employees.
- Implement operations and maintenance programs, and use accredited personnel and laboratories for most of these activities.
In addition, the branch is responsible for investigating radon gas and mold problems in school buildings, selecting the best strategy, and directing the efforts of a multidisciplinary team to assure overall indoor air quality in school buildings.
