Capital Bond Improvement Projects
Capital Bond Improvement Projects for Fairfax County Public Schools are administered by the Department of Facilities and Transportation Services, Office of Design and Construction Services. Projects include new construction, renewals, and other capital facility projects. Competitive bids are obtained from pre-qualified bidders that have submitted a Pre-Qualification Application for construction services for Capital Bond Improvement Projects. These projects are advertised in Plan Rooms. Plans and bidding documents can be obtained from the architect assigned to the particular bond project.
These projects range from approximately $3,000,000 and above. The construction services include the major trades for building new schools, additions, and renewals of school buildings.
The Financial Management & Contracting Section is responsible for procurement and contract support for the Office of Design & Construction Services. Please visit the Financial Management and Contracting Section Pre-Qualification Application web site for further information on how to pre-qualify. You may also contact the contract administrator at 703-246-6909.
The building and renovation of schools are not financed through the school system's operating funds, but through bonds (2007 Bond Referendum). The sale of municipal bonds is a form of long-term borrowing that spreads the cost of major capital improvements over the years the facilities are used. Increases in the number of children born to county residents means that Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) must construct and equip new schools. FCPS also needs to renovate its older schools to ensure that students, county-wide, have effective and efficient learning environments.
