New
England is the smallest region in the United States. It includes
Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and
Rhode Island.
The early settlers in the region were the Plymouth Pilgrims who
landed in Massachusetts in 1620. Popular foods include heavy stews,
chowders, black bread, baked beans and boiled dinners.
New
Englanders eat a variety of seafood caught from the sea - lobster,
clams, oysters, cod and herring. An old-fashioned New England
Clambake is an eating experience. Trays of onions, potatoes, sweet
corn, chicken and lobster are cooked over red-hot stones arranged
in a pit dug on the beach.
