Primary source materials can make history come alive for students.  This two-part series provides teachers with training on how to integrate primary source materials into the classroom.  Using a wealth of available online resources, the series focuses on ways to use primary sources to illustrate, supplement, and enrich lessons for students.

The Library of Congress

Adventure of the American Mind

The first program focuses on what primary sources are and why it is important for students to use them.  This program takes educators inside the Library of Congress, the world’s largest library.  Featured segments include the Library of Congress web site and some of the original documents that have been digitized.  Educators discover the vast and varied digital resources that can be integrated into classroom instruction in a variety of disciplines.
This program introduces educators to the Northern Virginia Partnership of Adventure of the American Mind project, a national initiative funded by a federal grant through the Library of Congress. Educators learn how to navigate the Primary Source Learning web site and how to locate classroom activities and lesson plans that can be found on the site.  Viewers also go into the classroom to see how teachers are using primary sources in the classroom.
