Parents and caregivers are a child's first and most important teacher, and, from the day a child is born, he or she is ready to learn. An important part of this early learning stage is language. This two-part series, aimed at Spanish speaking parents, demonstrates how to teach literacy through rhyming, music, movement, playing, talking, storytelling, and reading. Educators share information to help parents understand how important their role is in their child's early literacy development and later success in school. 1-1:30 p.m.
This program explains parents’ roles in language developmentreceptive, expressive, pragmatic; a pediatrician explains brain development; and experts discuss multilingual ability, phonemic awareness, and early intervention strategies.
1:30 - 2 p.m.
This program focuses on cognitive skills, print awareness, letter recognition and phonemic awareness. Parents learn the importance of early literacy development, and how to promote literacy through family activities.
