Philbrick
September 24, 2008 · Grades 9-12

National Book Award winner and finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, Nathaniel Philbrick discusses his book The Mayflower and the Pilgrims’ New World. Based on Mayflower: A Story of Courage, Community, and War, Philbrick’s award-winning title for adult readers, this book demystifies the story of the first Thanksgiving and the Pilgrim legacy.

During the program, Philbrick discusses his approach to writing narrative non-fiction, the role of primary sources in research, and the aftermath of a little known conflict, King Philip’s War. He also answers questions posed by students in the studio and via telephone and e-mail. Videotaped segments include Captain John Smith’s role in New England history and how students and teachers can access on-line primary sources for school projects.
