Tess, the main character of Do the Math: Secrets, Lies and Algebra, is an eighth grader who looks at life in mathematical terms. She deals with standard middle school issues–friendship and loyalty, family dynamics, boys and peer pressure. In an unusual twist for middle school readers, Tess is comfortable with her math skills.
During this live presentation, author Wendy Lichtman talks about writing mysteries and solving problems—-that is, math problems! She also answers questions from students. In one segment, students discuss math signs as ways to describe personal behavior.
