Gail Karwoski writes "to learn things ... about the world and about myself. When I do the research for my books, I learn things about topics that interest me."
Surviving Jamestown is an excellent introduction to our nation's earliest days, told through the eyes of 12-year-old Samuel Collier. This fictionalized biography of Jamestown makes for a fun read and is "a great learning tool for middle school teachers to use as a supplement to the study of early settlers and settlements." Using the journals of Lewis and Clark as a guide, Karwoski crafted a story around the expedition's dog, Seaman.
During the program, Karwoski takes viewers on a fascinating tour of the Jamestown Rediscovery site as well as the Jamestown Settlement living history museum. Students learn that history is ever evolving. The author provides tips for teachers on using primary sources in the classroom.
