Judith Ortiz Cofer is a poet, novelist and essayist. Through her writing, she explores the process of change and assimilation in Hispanic American culture. While she writes and teaches in English, as a child she spoke only in Spanish. An Island Like You: Stories of the Barrio was named a Best Book of the Year, 1995-96 by the American Library Association. It was awarded the first Pura Belpre medal by REFORMA of ALA in 1996.
