A lifelong nature lover, Cherry hopes her books will encourage children "to explore the woods, to sit and listen, watch and wait." She also wants to impress on them the importance of making our world a better place in which to live.
The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest was named a Reading Rainbow review book, an American Booksellers "Pick of the Lists" selection, and an NSTA-CBC Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children. Her numerous titles include Flute's Journey: The Life of a Wood Thrush, A River Ran Wild, The Armadillo From Amarillo, and The Shaman's Apprentice: A Tale of the Amazon Rain Forest.
During the program, Cherry talks about her books and her commitment to stories with environmental themes. Segments include Cherry working at her Maryland farm and a story about middle school students on an environmental science field trip.
