Carbone
March 15, 2007 · Grades 5-8

Elisa Carbone released Blood on the River: James Town 1607 in time to celebrate the 400th anniversary of John Smith’s effort to establish an English colony on the banks of the James River. The story is told through the eyes of John Smith’s young page, Samuel Collier. As one reviewer wrote, “Samuel’s voice enters your head with the first line and pulls you along at breakneck speed without a pause to the very end. This is the way to learn history—by loving characters and facing what they face.”

Carbone is best known for her books for young people, including Stealing Freedom, an ALA Best Book for Young Adults, and Storm Warriors, an ALA Notable Children’s Book and winner of the Virginia Library Association’s 2002 Jefferson Cup Award.

In this return visit, the author talks about her unique approach to research, characters in her books, and answers student questions.
