Fairfax Network's Passport 2013
By Donna Franklin—Coordinator, Multimedia Service Center FCPS
If you and your students are ready for a year-long adventure in learning, don't forget your Passport your Fairfax Network Passport! For over 20 years, Information Technology's Multimedia Services team has produced hundreds of instructional and staff development television programs developed by educators for educators. Marketed within FCPS and across the country as the Fairfax Network's Passport Collection, this annual offering of programs is designed to support and enrich instruction.
George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate will continue to serve as a backdrop for Passport 2013 programming this year. With the generous support of the Reynolds Foundation, Mount Vernon and the Fairfax Network will partner to produce three programs that will bring history alive. In November, Mount Vernon: The Constitution and Executive Power will provide insight into Washington's efforts to define the constitutional role of the executive office. In spring 2013, historical interpreters will portray Martha Washington, Abigail Adams and Dolley Madison in Mount Vernon: The First Ladies. The program will be hosted by journalist Cokie Roberts. In April, Mount Vernon: 18th Century Surveying will recall George Washington's early career in the field, and make connections to the math and science principles used in surveying.
The Meet the Author series returns this year with heroes and villains, fact and fantasy. The series kicks off in September with Eoin Colfer, author of the bestselling Artemis Fowl series. Colfer's books are popular among 4-8th graders, and feature fantasy-fiction themes. In October, writer and accomplished cartoonist Marc Tyler Nobleman will share his experiences researching and writing Boys of Steel: The Creators of Superman. From fiction to fact, November brings author Rosalyn Schanzer to Meet the Author to share her books that depict the life and times of real heroes, legends and historical events. Her latest work is Witches! The Absolutely True Tale of Disaster in Salem. In December, Neal Shusterman, award winning author of books for young adults, will talk about his stories that engage even the most reluctant readers. A dynamic storyteller, Shusterman will share his works such as Unwind, Everlost, and Downsiders.
Meet the Author is the result of a long and successful relationship between the Fairfax Network, publishers and authors. Authors participate in the series at no cost to FCPS. Depending on the author schedules, some shows will air live, while others will be pre-recorded. FCPS producers will continue to add authors to the line-up for the 2012-13 school year.
