2009 FCPS Summer Services Descriptions

ESY Services – No Fee
ESY services are provided only to students whose IEP team has determined that such services are required to ensure that the student will not significantly jeopardize gains made during the 180-day school year. All ESY services and transportation are provided free of charge as a part of the student’s access to a free, appropriate public education (FAPE), in accordance with the Individuals with Disabilities Improvement Act (IDEA) of 2004. For more information regarding summer ESY services, please see Summer ESY 2009

SOL Remediation for Eighth Grade Reading and Math – No Fee
Reinforcing Foundations, an SOL remediation program for high school students working towards a Modified Standard Diploma, will be offered free of charge at the Secondary ESY Learning Community site.

Elementary and Middle School Intervention Programs – No Fee
Many elementary and middle schools will offer 3 week intervention programs to provide targeted literacy and numeracy instruction. These programs are open by principal invitation to all students (including those with disabilities) who meet the criteria established by each school. In past years, these criteria have included such things as failure to pass SOL tests and/or courses, enrollment in a targeted grade level, reading level, etc. Questions about these programs should be directed to the school principal.

High School Content Classes – Fee Required
Each high school will offer courses for credit remediation and SOL remediation. These courses will take place at the base school or at partner sites when necessary due to low enrollment. These courses are designed for students who failed to meet course requirements by the end of the term, and need additional time/remediation to master core required skills. All students, including those with disabilities, may participate in these small group classes for a fee. In addition, new courses may be taken online through the FCPS online campus, for a fee. Direct special education services will not be available for new courses or credit remediation, but teacher consultation regarding strategies or accommodations will be provided. Questions regarding registration for these options should be addressed to the student’s assigned counselor.
