Student Transfer Information

Initial "New" Student Transfer Season for the 2012-13 school year
begins March 1, 2012

A parent or guardian of a student enrolled in FCPS may request a student transfer for his or her school-aged child (K-12) from the base school for the next school year during transfer season.

All transfers are considered on a space available basis. Building capacity information is available. School capacity projections will be updated in late April for the 2012-13 school year.

FCPS considers transfer requests for very specific reasons as outlined in Regulation 2230. They are:
1. Family relocation *
2. Child care hardship (elementary only) *
3. Medical, emotional, or social adjustment *
4. FCPS parent employee working 20 or more hours per week*
5. High school curricular program*
6. Sibling in requested school

* Applicants must provide specific documentation to support the transfer request.

Student Application Procedure and Deadlines:

1. Students must be enrolled in their base school before starting the application procedure. Registration information is available at http://www.fcps.edu/dss/osp/StudentRegistration

Unsure about your base school? Boundary information is available at http://boundary.fcps.edu/boundary/

2. Parents must complete and submit the appropriate transfer application to the base school by the specified deadlines.

Important Reminders:

    • Applications must be complete, with required documentation attached.
    • If approved, transfers are granted for one year only.
    • Transportation is not provided by FCPS.  Parents must provide a safe method of transportation.
    • A transfer may be terminated if the conditions of the transfer are not maintained by the student, if the student violates the student code of conduct, if the student does not attend school regularly, or if the student does not make academic progress.

In addition, if a student is seeking a High School Curricular transfer:

    • The requested course of study must not be offered at the base high school.
    • The request must be for the high school closest to the student’s residence ONLY that offers the requested program
    • The letter of understanding must accompany each application.
    • IB candidates must meet with the IB Coordinator to develop a four-year plan to be submitted with the application.
    • Requests for individual courses or extracurricular activities cannot be approved. For example a student at an AP school cannot transfer to another AP school for a single AP course.
    • Students may not be eligible to participate in secondary school interscholastic athletics for one year.
