Everything in an adolescent female’s world starts and ends with her. It’s all
about her. This can present challenges when she
is confronted by the needs of others or difficult
choices. In an effort to address some of the many
issues that confront middle school girls, a support
group was formed at Herndon Middle School. The group is facilitated by psychologists, a counselor, and a graduate level
psychology practicum student to address issues
related to academic improvement, good nutrition,
staying active, etiquette, healthy relationships,
communication skills and making good choices. Along
with weekly after-school sessions that focused
on these issues, the girls also had an opportunity
to attend an etiquette workshop at the Reston Hyatt
Regency, sponsored by The Links, Inc. In addition,
the girls group hosted a visit to Herndon Middle School by Miss Virginia 2007, Hannah Kiefer. Many of the group’s activities
were supported by a mini-grant from the Fairfax
Education Association.
