Welcoming Atmosphere Walk-Through
The Welcoming Atmosphere Walk-Through is a process for looking at your school as others may see it.
During the process, a team comprised of parents, community representatives, school staff members, and personnel from Family Services and Involvement Section (FSIS) personnel will look at features of your school that help parents and community members know they are welcomed as partners in the students' education.
Based on their observations, the team will complete a Welcoming Atmosphere Commendation/ Recommendation Form highlighting the welcoming aspects of your school and offering suggestions for review and consideration.

Who Will Do the Walk-Through?
FSIS will gladly facilitate and participate in the walk-through with staff and community representatives. The walk-through team will consist of 16 people: 12 people (4 school staff members and 8 parents/community representatives) you have selected and 4 facilitators from FSIS.
Please consider choosing team members who represent the diversity of your parents, your staff, your programs, and your community. For example, you may want to include an administrator, a teacher, a custodian, a secretary, a bus driver, a cafeteria worker, a neighbor, a community leader, a special education parent, a PTA board member, an ESOL parent, a general education parent, and/or others who represent the various groups in your school community.

What Is the Procedure?
FSIS will do the following:
- Plan and schedule the walk-through with a school contact person.
- Prepare a walk-through packet for each team member.
- Divide participants into component teams and facilitate the briefing, walk-through, and debriefing.
- Write a summary of the team's observations, commendations, and recommendations; submit it to the principal following the walk-through.
- Follow-up with the school to discuss next steps.
The school administrator or his/her designee is asked to do the following before the walk-through:
- Select walk-through team members who are representative of your school and community and invite them to become part of the walk-through team. Send the list of names and roles in your school or community to your FSIS cluster representative.
- Provide a meeting room large enough for your team members plus four FSIS team leaders.
- Provide space for each of the 4 component teams to meet and talk separately. (This could be the same room with teams moving to separate corners.)
- Provide the name of the administrator(s) who will be interviewed.
- Provide a map/floor plan of the school.
- Collect samples of all written materials sent to parents/families, i.e., a parent/student handbook, two recent newsletters, a student directory, and a packet of materials for new students and families.
- Submit to the FSIS contact person the school's website address and the telephone numbers, including the message lines through which families and community members can contact the school and obtain needed information. (FSIS staff will call those numbers before the actual walk-through.) Send any information we would need to access your web site.
- Note: It is requested that written materials, website information, and telephone numbers be sent to FSIS at least one week prior to the walk-though so that they can be reviewed in advance. School and community members involved in the walk-through will have an opportunity to review the written materials on the day of the walk-through.
