                Happy New Year!
                By Karen Siple, Principal

We hope that everyone had a relaxing and refreshing winter holiday. On Tuesday, January 3, 2012, our staff and students all appeared excited and enthusiastic about returning to school. It’s good to be back! We have much to learn and do during the busy month of January.

Be sure to check out “Timely Announcements” on page 4 of this newsletter for important events you won’t want to miss at Lutie Lewis Coates Elementary -- as well as the three dates that are student holidays this month! We are especially looking forward to sharing “Family Learning Night” with everyone on January 19.

This month, all students who speak a language other than English in their home will be assessed with the WIDA (World-class Instructional Design and Assessment) Access Test. This instrument measures each student’s progress in reading, writing, listening, and speaking English. The results are used to determine the level of ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) support needed to help students access the general education curriculum in language arts. Scores will be mailed to each student’s home during the summer.

We hope that you will make sure your child is dressed warmly and send him or her out to the bus stop each morning as this builds independence and responsibility. If you need to drive your child to school, remember that Kiss ‘n Ride is supervised only from 8:45-9:15 a.m. and 3:55-4:10 p.m. If you are arriving at any other time, please come to the office to drop off or pick up your child.
We wish each of you a happy and healthy new year! We are glad that you are a part of the Coates family!

Karen Siple, Principal
