You can register for these PRC/FCPS sponsored and co-sponsored workshops, online or by calling The FCPS Parent Resource Center at 703-204-3941.

Accommodations and interpreters are available. Please let us know two weeks in advance if you need these services.

Note: When schools are closed or there is a late opening or early closing due to inclement weather, our workshops are cancelled. Selected workshops may be rescheduled.

Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs

Join us as we kick-off our year-long series of Mind in the Making workshops! Ellen Galinsky, author of Mind in the Making: Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs, was the keynote speaker at the Special Education Conference in March 2014. Learn the research behind these skills and how they all involve executive functions of the brain for ages 0 - 8. Our Mind in the Making Facilitiators will present an overview of the Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs at this introductory workshop ~ which includes a Lunch & Learn session from 12:00 - 12:30 pm!

Mind in the Making: Focus and Self-Control

Learn the research behind why focus and self-control is one of the Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs. Learn strategies for improving this skill, the importance of it in children's lives and activities to promote the skill. This evidence-based skill involves executive functions of the brain for ages 0 - 8.

Just One of the Kids

Do you want to learn how to create an inclusive family for your children with and without a physical disability? Do you want your children to have fun, be responsible, make friends, and take acceptable risks – in short, to feel like “just one of the kids” – and want to make sure that the needs of the whole family are met, too? Join Kay Harris Kriegsman, Ph.D. and Sara Palmer, Ph.D. the authors of Just One of the Kids to learn how to raise children who are resilient and ready for adulthood.

Just One of the Kids was written by Kay Harris Kriegsman, Ph.D., a practicing psychologist, consultant on disability issues, and author of Taking Charge; Teenagers Talk about Life and Physical Disabilities and Sara Palmer, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Physical Medicine. She is also the coauthor of Spinal Cord Injury: A Guide for Living.

Kay Harris Kriegsman, Ph.D. and Sara Palmer, Ph.D. will share:

  • key elements in preparing children for the future: responsibility, socialization, risk taking and experience
  • ideas about how to balance the needs of children with and without disabilities
  • ideas about how parents can meet their own needs while raising a family

  • with children in the referral or eligibility phase of the Special Education process;
