Groundbreaking at Wolftrap Elementary for Candace Leyton Learning Lab

Thanks to the Shumway Foundation and former Wolftrap student Chris Shumway, a freestanding learning lab is being constructed at Wolftrap ES in honor of Candice Leyton a former teacher at the school who inspired

Chris and others to reach beyond a classroom’s walls when learning.  Construction is anticipated to be completed Winter 2013.  More Information.

 

 

Hopecam and FCPS Establish Partnership to Serve Homebound Students

School System, McLean Project for the Arts Announce Partnership (Sun Gazette)

MPA-ArtReach

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) have established a formal partnership, with an emphasis on providing exhibition tours and hands-on art projects for students in local elementary schools. Tours, conducted by professional art educators, will demonstrate art principles and incorporate concepts included in the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) guidelines. The partnership will also provide guest artists to conduct workshops at schools; bring artists-in-residence to students; offer programs designed to meet the needs of middle and high school special education classes, and provide exhibition space for the annual Youth Art Show in March and for student artwork at the MPAartfest.

 

Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce Event Support STEM

It was a Jackpot for Student Scholarships at the Dulles Regional Chamber of Commerce’s third annual Casino Night.   According to the chamber’s president Eileen Curtis, the funds align generated and donated align with the chamber’s mission and that of FCPS, “The Dulles Regional Chamber is a workforce chamber andwe count tomorrow’s workforce as a critical component of solving our workforce issues and training today’s students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competencies. Library READesigned!

Students at Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School join Principal Marie Lemmon at the school’s Library READesign ribbon cutting ceremony. The READesign was a several week renovation of the school’s library that included technology enhancements, new carpet and furniture and a very large book donation. Pastor, Student and Principal Sign Partnership Agreement

Trinity Presbyterian Church in Herndon and Herndon Elementary inked their partnership on Friday, February 3.   The partnership allows Trinity to provide tutors to help students with math, science, reading and other subjects; support the leadership of clubs; provide coats, shoes and other clothes to students who may need them; donate books, and more.  Thank you partnering Trinity!

 

 

New Greenbriar McDonalds has Purple Pride!

chantillymcdonaldsThe newly renovated McDonalds Restaurant in the Chantilly’s Greenbriar Town Center has color splashes of purple and white -- the same colors as nearby Chantilly High School. Owned and operated by Van Management, “Chantilly’s” McDonalds took the connection to the school a significant step further by partnering with staff and students. In the photograph with Ronald McDonald and other McDonalds employees are Chantilly High School marketing students, staff members, and dignitaries from the county and FCPS. Time Warner Cable donates to Hutchison Elementary

Hutchison Elementary students and staff were able to demonstrate their new STEM lab to its benefactors, Time Warner Cable, and to FCPS and Fairfax County dignitaries. After witnessing the demonstrations, everyone was entertained by a group of 2nd grade singers and by students from all grade levels who read letters they had written expressing their gratitude for the lab. Following the singing and the letters, Time Warner presented the school with all the proceeds from a golf tournament they held on September 30.

 

Financial Literacy Online Course Donation

Financial Literacy Online Course DonationFairfax County Public Schools is collaborating with the Genworth Foundation to bring high schools an online financial literacy course called My Money, My Future.

Developed by Washington, D.C.-based EverFi, Inc and funded by Genworth and Northern Virginia-based Cardinal Bank, My Money, My Future supplements the existing financial literacy curriculum for Virginia high school teachers. It provides the training and tools necessary for teachers to teach mandated financial literacy education in the state’s high schools. More

McDonald's employee assisting children with foodCamelot Elementary School Principal Craig Gfeller serves his students at a school fundraiser at the Merrifield McDonald’s.  As part of a partnership with Van Management McDonald’s, $450 was raised for the school. 

This year, $10,700 dollars has been donated to six schools by Van Management McDonald’s which is partnered with 7 schools in our county. 

The new standard Happy Meal comes with a burger or 4 nuggets, apple slices, 1.1 oz. fries, and a fat free milk

A $10,000 Donation was recently made by Bob's Discount FurnitureA $10,000 Donation was recently made by Bob's Discount Furniture. $5,000 went to Kent Gardens Elementary, and five $1,000 donations to Falls Church and Stuart High Schools, Longfellow Middle School, Haycock and Shrevewood Elementary Schools.

Google Earth Partnership

Google Earth PartnershipGoogle and FCPS complete 2010-11 Google Earth partnership with showcase of dynamic student work. The partnership trained educators to create curriculum packets supporting geography, math, science and history lessons. The showcase demonstrated that the packets work - as students "wowed" participants with science and geography based mapping projects and useful 3D SketchUp drawings.

Greenspring Retirement Community Gives back to FCPS through generous donationGreenspring and its parent company Erickson Living has donated volunteer time and a total of $9,000 to Hayfield Secondary, and Lee, Madison and West Springfield high schools.  The donations are support the various projects at the school in this spring’s All Night Grad parties, purchases of technology.  Thank you Greenspring and the people that you serve for your generous and thoughtful support of FCPS.  Pictured are volunteer judges from Greenspring who were at Madison High School to judge a culinary competition.

Kent Gardens Inks Partnership With Naval Surface Warfare Center (Sun Gazette)

U.S. Navy Capt. Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper, who served as chief engineer on two NASA space shuttle launches, was the guest speaker at Kent Gardens Elementary School on Feb. 23, as part of the school’s celebration of National Engineers Week...The school also signed a partnership agreement with the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division during the event.

Northrop Grumman CANstruction Project at Hughes Middle School

Northrop Grumman CANstruction Project at Hughes Middle SchoolNorthrop Grumman employees joined students at Hughes Middle School to celebrate National Engineers Week by building a structure made entirely out of cans.  The CANstruction engineering project was also a food drive held at Hughes Middle School and various Northrop Grumman sites.  Between donations from employees and students, along with the help of Wegman’s Food Markets, the completed structure holds over 2,000 cans!  Following de-CANstruction, the canned goods will be donated to Reston Interfaith.

Financial Literacy and Financial SupportNorthwest Federal Credit Union (NWFCU) volunteers to read at Dranesville Elementary as part of their Penny Power Reading program.  NWFCU recently gave $20,000 to Dranesville and Louise Archer Elementary Schools, and Carson Middle School, and Herndon High School to be used for professional development for staff members and technological advances for the classroom.  Since 2005, NWFCU has awarded more than $93,000 in grants to the four schools, which has funded the purchase of SMART Boards™ and professional development training.  Thank you, Northwest Federal!

Hutchison Principal and Staff React to $10,000 Donation!Hutchison Elementary School Principal Judy Baldwin’s face lit up when she saw that Time Warner Cable’s annual charity golf outing raised $10,000.  The money will be used to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiatives at Hutchison.  Time Warner Cable and Hutchison “inked” their partnership deal this year and already they are forming lasting relationships through donations of volunteer time, STEM related field trips, and a surprise $10,000 donation that got the Hutchison school’s staff to stand in ovation!

German Orphan Home Giving Thanks

German Orphan HomeMartin Schaller, a board member of the German Orphan Home of the District of Columbia presents Superintendent Jack D. Dale with a $50,000 check.  The funds will be used to support the FCPS Office of Social Work Services and Homeless Program as well as White Oaks Elementary School – including medical and dental services, winter coats, school supplies, and other classroom materials.  Schaller and the German Orphan Home selected FCPS because of the needs and a desire to give back to a school district that Schaller says “does exceptional work.”

Volkswagen and Audi Train the Trainer Sessions Hit Second Gear

Round two of Train the Trainer sessions for FCPS automotive instructors concluded recently with lessons on fuels – additives and multiplicatives. The four-day session apprises the automotive instructors of the latest technologies in Volkswagen and Audi vehicles – especially diesel fuels - so that they can relay the information to their students. The Train to Trainer sessions are part of a 5 year partnership between Fairfax County Public Schools and the Volkswagen Group of America
