Google Partnership Summer Training

Last week Google’s Reston offices were filled with FCPS employees. Our employees were participating in a four day Google Earth training session. One of the educators at the training is thrilled to have learned how Google Earth showcases geological issues like plate tectonics. “The opportunity to questions, think, research and evaluate…” she says, “…are going to be very rich.” The 56 educators involved will be required to develop at least 24 unique, curricular packets. The packets will be juried and standards-based.

Broadband Partnership Supports FCPS Students

At a press conference on May 10, 2010 launching the partnership, dignitaries held a ceremonial cable connection in a model apartment at Kingsley Commons neighborhood in Falls Church, Virginia, the location of the first broadband installations for the Broadband CNCT Pilot. FCPS is one of many partners involved in this initiative, which is lead by the County’s Office of Public Private Partnerships.

Google and FCPS Ink Partnership Agreement

On June 14, 2010 Google and Fairfax County Public Schools inked a partnership agreement that places Google Earth professionals in front of 56 FCPS educators during a week-long summer session where educators will learn the intricacies of Google Earth in relation to teaching geography, history, math, science and other relevant subjects.  Over the course of the 2010-11 school year the FCPS employees will work in teams to develop at least 24 juried, standards-based and unique curriculum packets.  The curriculum packets will be shared among the 56 educators, the rest of FCPS, and worldwide by Google.  Google’s $35,000 donation will fund the summer training and teacher stipends.

Westfield High School recently kicked off their partnership with Northern Virginia Mediation Services a group dedicated to supporting enhanced conflict resolution at the school.

High-Speed Broadband Computer Connections

On Saturday, May 8, several Luther Jackson Middle School students received donated computers and modems and a half-day training session. Thanks to a partnership with the county Office of Public Private Partnerships, Cox Communications, Fairfax County Public Schools and Arlington Boulevard Community Development, the computers will go home with students who also have qualified to purchase discounted broadband access. The partnership aims to support student learning and the training including lessons in FCPS’ 24/7 and Keep in Touch software programs.

Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads Named FCPS Partner of the Year

The Rotary Club of Bailey’s Crossroads has been named Fairfax County Public Schools’ (FCPS) 2009-10 Partner of the Year for its work with FCPS – primarily at J.E.B. Stuart High School.  Bailey’s Rotary was honored at the 23nd annual FCPS Partners in Education and MentorWorks Award Ceremony held May 13.  Details about this and other partnership award nominees, finalists and winners. 

Grevey Hosts Benefit Golf Classic (Connection Newspaper)

More than 120 players joined Grevey to raise money for Fairfax County Public Schools and several charities.

Volkswagen Drive-Off Event

In June, Volkswagen Group of America launched its partnership with FCPS at a "Drive-Off" event attended by Virginia Governor, Timothy M. Kaine. At the "Drive-Off," the thirteen FCPS Auto Technology teachers were each given the keys to a new Volkswagen or Audi. The cars were driven to their schools where students will work on them and learn about the latest in automotive technology, including new diesel technologies.

First Robotics Competition

Students from several high schools in FCPS, including Centreville and Madison HS recently competed in the Washington DC Regional 2010 FIRST Robotics Competition at the Washington Convention Center. The teams spent six weeks building and creating a robot to compete in the "BREAKAWAY" challenge. Fairfax County Public Schools  would like to thank the multiple corporate sponsors, including BAE Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton, Lockheed Martin and NASA, numerous mentors, parents, and other volunteers. The event was truly a success!

Hutchison Elementary School students have first personal encounter with their pen pals

Some 50 volunteers from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency met with students from Hutchison Elementary School in Herndon to celebrate another successful year of partnering. At the celebration, business people and students who have been year-long pen pals met, in person, for the first time.
