MSAOC Salutes Top FCPS Schools
Selected schools in Fairfax County were recently honored by The Minority Student Achievement Oversight Committee (MSAOC) for their outstanding efforts toward closing the achievement gap for Black and Hispanic students. The awards ceremony, held in December at the Alan Leis Center, saluted the principals and staffs of the twenty elementary and eight middle schools that have substantially increased the SOL pass rate for Black and Hispanic students.
The MSAOC honored the efforts of six of the elementary schools with the “90-50-20” Award, where the SOL pass rate for Black and Hispanic students was at least 90 percent, minority enrollment was 50 percent or more, and the free and reduced price meals participation was 20 percent or more. These elementary schools are Bailey’s Crossroads, Freedom Hill, Graham Road, North Springfield, Pine Spring, and Westgate. Of the middle schools, Rocky Run received the “90-30-10” Award.
The awards were presented by Ralph Cooper, MSAOC Chair, and the organization's members. Assistant Superintendent for Accountability, Dr. Patrick Murphy, and Ms. Leslie Butz, Cluster VI Assistant Superintendent, were also in attendance.
The MSAOC is one of nine School Board citizen advisory committees whose mission is to monitor academic programs and policies within Fairfax County Public Schools, and make recommendations for improving minority student achievement.
