The School Board

Membership

A 12-member School Board is elected to four-year terms that are concurrent with the terms of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors; one School Board member represents each of nine magisterial (election) districts, and three members serve at large. The current School Board members’ terms expire on December 31, 2011.
A student representative, selected for a one-year term at a nominating convention conducted by the countywide Student Advisory Council, participates in discussions but does not vote.

Function

The School Board sets general school policy and, within the framework of Virginia Board of Education regulations, establishes guidelines that will ensure the proper administration of the county school program.

All School Board policies and regulations, including the Student Responsibilities and Rights booklet, are compiled in Policies, Notices, and Regulations. To locate them, use the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner labeled “What do you want to do?” and choose “Find a Policy or Regulation.” A search mechanism and numerical index is provided. If you do not have Internet access and would like a printed copy of any policy or regulation, please direct your request to your child’s school principal.

Meetings

Regularly scheduled business meetings are held twice each month except in August at 7 p.m. at Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road, Falls Church. These meetings are open to the public and are broadcast live on cable Channel 21.

Special meetings, public hearings, and work sessions on various subjects are scheduled frequently and are also open to the public.

Calendars, agendas, and regular business and work session meeting minutes are available.

If you have additional questions concerning the School Board please contact Yvette Rhodes in the School Board office.
