The Wolftrap staff is committed to providing all students with a learning environment that emphasizes academic excellence and fosters the development of personal responsibility for learning. All children are encouraged to explore opportunities for citizenship and participation in a variety of school activities.
We recognize the benefit of mainstreaming and inclusion of special education students to promote awareness and understanding of varying levels of intellectual and physical abilities. We believe that inclusion of special education students within all aspects of the school community helps to develop sensitivity to individual differences among staff, students and parents.
Wolftrap Elementary currently has five full-time special education teachers, and four instructional assistants, and one speech/language clinician. Depending on individual needs, students are served both in the general education setting and special education settings. Special education classrooms are equipped with computers and portable keyboards and a variety of other assistive technology devices to meet the needs of students. Other special education services are provided by itinerant specialists.
Wolftrap's special education teachers offer remedial and developmental instruction in readiness skills, alternate reading programs, written language, and mathematics. In addition, organizational skills and behavior management programs are developed and monitored. Science and social studies materials are adapted to meet the individual needs of students.
The speech/language clinician works with staff and students in order to promote effective communication skills in the classroom. Speech/language therapy is provided for students who demonstrate needs in articulation, fluency, voice, and expressive and receptive language skills. Services are offered both through direct therapy with students and in consultation with all staff members as needed.
Through a referral process, students have access to psycho-educational assessments that are conducted at Wolftrap in order to determine if they may qualify for special education services. Both parents and teachers may submit referrals.
If you suspect that your child may have a specific problem with learning or speech and language skills that might require his/her access to special education services, please contact your child's teacher at Wolftrap. Programs for other areas of disability are also available through Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). A detailed description of each disability is available by clicking on the Department of Student Services and Special Education on the web site for FCPS.
