Farewell to Our Former Students!
We would like to wish our graduating sixth graders the best of luck as they move on to middle school.  Most of our rising seventh graders will be attending Kilmer Middle School.  More information about Kilmer can be found at

Welcome to Our New Students!
We are looking forward to meeting our new sixth graders when the school year begins.  The sixth grade is a very special year in a student’s life because it marks the “beginning of the end” of elementary school.

Academically, it is a challenging year for the students.  What can students do to prepare for sixth grade?
Read books.  Summertime means leisure time for a lot of students.  What better way to spend some of that time than catching up on some good books?  Fairfax County has developed a list of suggested books to aid students in selecting their reading material.  Visit your local library to check it out.

Keep a journal.  Students can keep up their writing skills by keeping a journal of all the exciting things they do over the summer.  Not only is it good writing practice, but students will have an easier time answering the inevitable question, “What did you do over summer break?”  Students who like more interaction can find a pen pal and exchange letters over the summer. Everyone loves to get mail!

Practice math facts.  Students entering the sixth grade should have a firm knowledge of math facts including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  They should be able to perform those operations quickly and easily.  Summer is a great time to do some extra practice to get up to speed.

Visit the area’s many museums and cultural attractions.  This area has so much to offer in the way of museums and historical parks.  Students will be studying the formation of our government and American History through the Civil War.  If they have an opportunity to see a piece of our history, it will help them make the connection between the history being taught in the classroom and the world we live in today.
