In Math we build on concepts we have already mastered in order to solve more challenging problems.
In Social Studies we focus on Virginia History, including the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia’s role in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, and famous Virginians who helped build and strengthen our nation.
In Science we explore plants, magnetism/electricity, weather, ecosystems, and simple machines. In Reading we study a variety of genres to sharpen skills and spend time learning how to make personal connections to what we read.
In writing and word study we develop our writing abilities by exploring different styles of writing which also help improve our spelling, grammar, and vocabulary skills.
In addition to school-wide events, we also have many special activities unique to 4th grade. In the first semester we travel to Jamestown, watch the National Symphony Orchestra perform, and produce our own research projects on famous Virginians. In the second semester we experience Colonial life through our Colonial Day celebration and continue our genre exploration through reading and writing. Also, throughout the year, we have book cafés, publishing parties, and guest speakers to help enrich our learning.
We’re fanatical about 4th grade at Wolftrap Elementary School!
